After a months-long saga between Ryan Garcia and promoter Golden Boy Promotions that nearly ended both sides' promotional partnership, the two sides have reconciled and resulted in Garcia getting a big pay raise.
Garcia signed a five-year extension to his current promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions and, according to him, will now be one of the highest-paid boxing prospects in the sport today. In addition, Garcia's will now fight Romero Duno on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Sergey Kovalev card on November 2.
Problems between Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions started to take a turn for the worse on the day before he was scheduled to face Avery Sparrow on September 14. When it was revealed that Sparrow had been arrested by U.S. Marshalls the day of weigh-ins, Garcia had asked for more money for a late replacement opponent, citing that he played a major role in adding ticket sales to the event.
Golden Boy Promotions then tried to book Garcia vs. Duno for September, but the fight could not be made as president Eric Gomez told the media that Garcia turned it down because Duno was "too tough." Gomez later backed off of those comments, but a deal couldn't be reached between both parties, and Garcia was removed from the card.
This led to Garcia taking to social media to voice his frustrations with the company, taking offense to comments made by Oscar De La Hoya suggesting that Garcia isn't the company's best prospect, but Vergil Ortiz Jr.
No other fights for the November 2 card had been set. The main event between Alvarez and Kovalev will be for Kovalev's WBO light heavyweight title.
