Srisaket Sor Rungvisai To Defend WBC Super Flyweight Title In Thailand

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai may have a stay-busy fight later this month, but he already has his next world title defense set.

The current WBC super flyweight champion has signed with Asian combat sports league ONE Championship and will be defending his title on an upcoming ONE Championship card in Thailand on October 6.

It had already been known that Sor Rungvisai would be defending his title in Thailand on that date when the WBC gave an extensive update on all world titles less than two weeks ago. The surprise came in the manner in which Sor Rungvisai’s upcoming title defense would be announced.

An opponent will be named at a later date, but because it is a voluntary title defense, Sor Rungvisai will be able to defend his title against any boxer ranked in the top 15 of the WBC’s super flyweight rankings. Below is the current top 15 in the WBC rankings at 118 lbs.

  1. Juan Francisco Estrada
  2. Roman Gonzalez
  3. McWilliams Arroyo
  4. Andrew Moloney
  5. Koki Eto
  6. Rex Tso
  7. Felipe Orucuta
  8. Norberto Jimenez
  9. Francisco Rodriguez Jr.
  10. Ryuichi Funai
  11. Jhonriel Casimero
  12. Julio Cesar Martinez
  13. Luis Concepcion
  14. Rene Dacquel

Sor Rungvisai will fight on July 21 in Thailand against South Korean boxer Young Gil Bae in a non-title bout. The WBC champion will be fighting in Thailand for the first time since 2016 after fighting in three straight world title fights in the United States. Sor Rungvisai won the WBC title with a unanimous decision win over former top pound-for-pound boxer Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez back in March 2017.
