Sullivan Barrera Suffers Eye Injury, Upcoming Fight Postponed

Sullivan Barrera's upcoming return to the ring will have to wait for a little while longer.

According to El Nuevo Herald, Barrera was supposed to headline a Facebook Live boxing stream on August 18 against Seanie Monaghan at the Sands Bethlehem Casino and Event Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but Barrera will not be able to fight as he suffered an injury to his right eye.

The former world title challenger spoke with the newspaper and expressed his disappointment with not getting a chance to fight in his first since March. The report also said Barrera is looking at a return for either October or November.

"Honestly, I feel really angry because of this because I was looking forward to my return to the ring. I promise my fans I will return stronger than ever but for now I'm not happy due to momentary setback," Barrera said.

Barrera has not fought since losing to Dmitry Bivol with the WBA light heavyweight title on the line. The fight, which was the co-main event of an HBO telecast from New York with Sergey Kovalev, saw Bivol stop Barrera in the 12th round of their fight.

The fight on August 18 was supposed to be the second fight in a five-fight deal between Facebook, Golden Boy Promotions and Main Events, who promote Barrera. The first fight in the deal will take place a week earlier as Jesus Rojas, recently elevated from WBA interim featherweight champion to "regular" champion, defends his title against Joseph Diaz.
