Rising contender Tevin Farmer was shot in Philadelphia the same night as the Adrien Broner vs. Mikey Garcia fight, but promoter Lou DiBella said Farmer narrowly avoided serious damage and is fine.
Farmer was set to travel to Brooklyn to attend the Broner vs. Garcia fight, but went to his niece's birthday party beforehand where a violent confrontation broke out. The father of Farmer's niece left the party following an altercation and returned with other people, one of whom was carrying a firearm. Farmer tried to disarm the person holding the gun and was shot in the hand while a bullet grazed near Farmer's brother's eye.
The incident took place before Broner and Garcia stepped into the ring, and a photo of Farmer hospitalized circulated around social media, but very little information was known for the entire night. The bullet went right through Tevin Farmer's hand, luckily did not break any bones or tendons.
DiBella took to Twitter to inform people that Farmer is fine and his career is not in danger. In a series of tweets, DiBella said the following:
"God had Tevin Farmer's back [July 29] when shot through his hand trying to disarm a would-be killer. No broken bones or serious damage. Both Tevin Farmer and his brother escaped serious injury; both have been cleared of any wrongdoing. The shooter is in jail and charged. Tevin Farmer can resume his boxing career later this year. [It's] just another speed bump for a kid who always finds a way to fly over them. [Farmer] was in custody until details of incident were investigated," DiBella said.
Farmer is expected to be out for several months while he recovers. Farmer recently signed with DiBella Entertainment and was ordered by the IBF to fight Francisco Fonseca in a title eliminator. The winner of that fight would have been the mandatory challenger to Gervonta Davis' title.
