Tom Schwarz may be coming into his upcoming fight against Tyson Fury as a major underdog, but Timothy Bradley is not completely dismissing his odds of beating Fury.
Bradley, a former world champion turned ESPN broadcaster, spoke with Fightful in a recent media conference call and was asked about Schwarz's chances of beating Fury. Fightful asked Bradley about what a fighter's mentality as the underdog changes after seeing someone like Andy Ruiz Jr. shock the world and beat Anthony Joshua to become the unified heavyweight champion just two weeks ago.
Bradley simply said it's all about how a fighter's style clashes with his opponent and that anything can happen. He added that Schwarz does have a strong right hand and Fury has been susceptible to getting knocked down from a right hand in the past, things that will no doubt play into Schwarz's confidence heading into the fight.
?Style make fights and I say this over and over again. Like I said, the unexpected is all around us. We don?t even know when we?re going to lose our life. I think Tom Schwarz definitely has at least a puncher?s chance. He has a right hand, he packs a right hand. We?ve seen in the past Tyson Fury go down from the right hand. You just saw him go down from Wilder?s right hand. Steve Cunningham knocked him down with the right hand, but then you also see Tyson Fury get back up. He gets up and then he dominates and finishes that round and then he comes back and he knocks guys out or wins the fight. You see the fight and the desire in Fury?s eyes," Bradley said.
Although Bradley does respect Schwarz's abilities and chances of scoring the upset, but in the end, the former welterweight champion believes that Schwarz doesn't have the speed or the experience necessary to do what no man has ever done and that is defeat "The Gypsy King" in the pro ranks.
"I think the experience alone will help Fury in this fight. As for Schwarz, I think he?s big enough [to win], he?s 6?6?, he?s not like Andy Ruiz, but he?s a smart heavyweight. But I think Schwarz lacks experience, I think he lacks speed and like I said, he has a puncher?s chance, but he doesn?t have the footwork or the IQ, I believe, to beat a guy like Tyson Fury,? Bradley said.
Fury vs. Schwarz will headline the June 15 Top Rank Boxing card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas that will be streamed on ESPN+. Rising women's boxing star Mikaela Mayer will headline a prelim card that will be televised on ESPN2.
