Tomoki Kameda is the WBC's new interim champion at 122 pounds.
In the main event of a boxing card at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Kameda scored a resounding unanimous decision victory over Abigail Medina. Kameda won with scores of 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112.
The fight was mostly one-sided throughout the first two-thirds of the bout in favor of Kameda. Kameda had much success by landing the left hand and jab at Medina, keeping the Spanish fighter from letting his hands go. Medina was able to eventually string together successful rounds late in the fight, but it was nowhere near enough to cut into Kameda's big lead created earlier in the fight.
The interim title was created by the WBC as a direct result of full world champion Rey Vargas' injuries since a May 2018 title defense. Vargas underwent surgery earlier this year and had pneumonia which would further delay an in-ring return. Vargas has been in talks with WBA champion Daniel Roman over a potential unification fight to take place in early 2019 although no fight deal has been made.
This is now Kameda's first super bantamweight title after a successful run as the WBO bantamweight titleholder from 2013-2014. Kameda is now on a five-fight win streak since losing two straight WBA bantamweight title fights to Jamie McDonnell back in 2015.
As for Medina, the loss ended his near five-year unbeaten streak since a December 2013 loss to McDonnell. Prior to the fight against Kameda, Medina was the EBU's European super bantamweight champion.
