Trio Of Mexican World Champions Retain Titles At Top Rank PPV

While Shawn Porter was busy pummeling Andre Berto in Brooklyn, Top Rank held a pay-per-view to showcase three of their world champions -- Gilberto Ramirez, Oscar Valdez and Jessie Magdaleno.

All three retained their titles on the pay-per-view, which also featured the professional debut of 2016 Olympic medalist Shakur Stevenson.

In a grueling and lengthy bout, Valdez was able to defeat Miguel Marriaga via unanimous decision to retain the WBO featherweight title (119-108, 118-109, 116-111). Valdez, a knockout artist, had competed in just his second 12-round fight in his professional career and has gone the distance for only the third time in his career.

This is Valdez's second defense of the title he won back in July 2016. Valdez was able to escape with the win and said after the fight he was happy to not only win, but also knows he can compete in all 12 rounds of the fight.

"That was a learning experience, because now I know I can go the distance," Valdez said. "That was one thing in the back of my mind. I've only done it in sparring."

In his first defense of his WBO Junior featherweight title, Jessie Magdaleno made quick work of Adeilson Dos Santos, knocking him out near the end of the second round of the bout. Magdaleno previously knocked down Dos Santos in the round.

"He kept trying to counter me, but I know I'm a faster and stronger guy than he is," Magdaleno said. "I waited for him to make a mistake, and that's when I countered with the right hook. Down he went."

Lastly, Ramirez was extremely dominant in his win over Max Bursak to retain his WBO super middleweight title. Bursak was docked two points for holding, but it never mattered as Ramirez won in all three judges' scorecards 120-106.

That was Ramirez's first defense of his title since winning it off Arthur Abraham back in early April last year. Ramirez improves his record to 35-0 as a professional boxer.
