Tyson Fury isn’t too concerned about a potential WBC heavyweight title eliminator against Dillian Whyte. In fact, Fury is pretty much disregarding the whole matter.
Recently, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman stated that the governing body intends on having the two fighters compete in a final eliminator to name a mandatory challenger to Deontay Wilder’s world title as a response for Whyte being No. 1 in the heavyweight rankings for several months.
In an interview with Behind The Gloves’ Michelle Joy Phelps, Fury said he’s not exactly going to follow through with what the WBC wants to do.
“I don’t really think too much of it because it's like, I’m the lineal heavyweight champion of the world. I fight who I want, when I want, how I want and I don’t need to fight eliminators to fight people. I already had a Deontay Wilder fight the other day without an eliminator, so I definitely don’t need to fight in an eliminator," Fury said.
Fury's comments don't come as a surprise given that he has said similar things weeks back in an interview with BT Sport Boxing. Fury said back then that despite him being highly ranked by multiple governing bodies, he won't pay too much attention to title eliminators an organization might order him to do.
As for his thoughts on Whyte himself, Fury said he thinks Whyte isn’t getting a fair shake from the WBC and that he deserves to have a title opportunity instead of having to routinely face other contenders with no promise of a world championship opportunity. Whyte will be facing Oscar Rivas on July 20 in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card at The O2 in London.
When asked again about going through with the WBC and fighting in a title eliminator, Fury said he won’t do what the WBC, or anybody for that matter, tells him to do.
“I ain’t being ordered to do anything by anybody. I’ve got my own sh*t going on. I’m going at my own pace and I do what I want to do,” Fury said.
Fury is currently preparing for his Top Rank Boxing debut on June 15 when he takes on unbeaten contender Tom Schwarz. The fight will headline an ESPN+ card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The full interview with Phelps can be seen in the interview at the top of the page.
