UFC's Leslie Smith Has Tumor, Can't Afford Treatment

MMA

UFC women's bantamweight Leslie Smith is known as one of the toughest women fighters in the history of women's MMA. In her fight against Jessica Eye at UFC 180, Smith fought with part of her ear coming off. Now, the 16-fight veteran has a tougher battle on her hands.

On a recent edition of "Inside MMA" on AXS TV, Smith was discussing the possibility of a fighters association or union when she announced that she has a tumor on her stomach. Smith then revealed she cannot afford to pay for the treatment.

“I have a tumor on my stomach," Smith said. "But, I don't have a way to get that fixed. I don't have a way to get that taken off because it's not a fight related issue."

Smith didn't say whether she has talked to the UFC to see if they will help her out and get the tumor taken care of.

The UFC does have insurance for their fighters but it is form of liability insurance that covers them for injuries suffered during fights or when they are in training. The insurance the UFC has isn't the kind of medical insurance that an employer would typically provide that covers the general health of an individual and in most cases, their families as well. It is unknown at this time if the UFC will help Smith out in her treatment.

Smith (8-7-1, 2-3 UFC) last competed at UFC 198 when she lost by first-round TKO to Cris Cyborg and currently didn't have a fight scheduled.

We wish the Smith the best in her recovery.
