Wanderlei Silva Says He Suffers From Concussion-Like Symptoms, CSAC Head Comments

MMA

Wanderlei Silva has competed 51 times as a professional MMA fighter and was last seen in action at Bellator 206 in September of 2018.

The fighter, who has been in some of the most brutal MMA fights ever, has revealed that he is suffering from several concussion-like symptoms.

“I was in a lecture about concussion and of the 10 symptoms the guy mentioned, I had eight,” Silva said to PVT. “The symptoms would be, for example, mood swings, getting angry very fast, forgetting some things, having difficulty sleeping.”

In Silva’s 51 fight professional MMA career, a total of 32 bouts have ended by KO/TKO and another three have ended by way of submission.

Silva plans on donating his brain to science after he passes away, which has started the fighter on the journey to contact people in order to make said donation.

“I thought a lot about it and even tried to contact people to make this donation,” Silva said. “I have the most interested in donating, since I won’t be using it anyway [laughs]. This area is very important.”

There is no word if this latest revelation will allow Silva to continue fighting, as he has competed just twice in the past five-plus years.

A statement has been issued by California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Executive Director Andy Foster to MMA Junkie about what Silva had claimed:

“We’re going to have to make sure he’s neurologically fit to go. If fighters say things like this in the press, we have to follow up. He’s welcome to fight here if he’s medically cleared.”

It should be noted that even if the CSAC doesn't grant Silva a license to fight in the state in the future, it won't prohibit Silva from trying to compete in other jurisdictions.
