WBA Bantamweight Title Fight Ends In No Decision After Accidental Clash Of Heads

Liborio Solis wanted another shot at the WBA bantamweight title, but the second go-around ended in a massive disappointment.

Solis fought champion Jamie McDonnell in Monte Carlo where the fight had to be stopped in the third round due to a massive cut McDonnell suffered in the fight. The cut was from an accidental clash of heads. The third round was action-packed with both men throwing combo after combo, but the action stopped numerous times while McDonnell was getting checked in by the ringside doctor.

The fight came to a halt with less than 20 seconds remaining in the third round. The crowd at the Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin was in disbelief at the sudden ending of the fight. Since the fight was stopped before four rounds concluded, the fight was called a no decision, meaning McDonnell retained the belt.

There is one saving grace for Solis if there is one. McDonnell said in the post-fight interview that he now plans to move up in weight, leaving the title vacant and for the taking. Although the move is not official, Solis will be one of the boxers in play for when the WBA makes their matchup for the soon-to-be-vacant title.

In their first encounter last year, McDonnell defeated Solis, winning a unanimous decision by scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. Solis requested a rematch to the WBA and the organization granted Solis the rematch. The fight was on the Dmitry Bivol vs. Trent Broadhurst WBA light heavyweight title fight undercard.
