WBC 154-Pound Champion Jermell Charlo Challenges WBO Champion Sadam Ali To Fight

After WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo took down Erickson Lubin in the first round of their bout last year, Charlo wanted a unification bout and now has called out fellow world champion Sadam Ali.

Charlo recently challenged Ali, the WBO champion at junior middleweight, to a fight on Twitter. Charlo had been hoping to fight either IBF champion Jarrett Hurd or WBA champion Erislandy Lara next fight but it appears that Hurd and Lara could be facing each other instead.

Showtime's Stephen Espinoza retweeted Charlo's challenge, seemingly showing interest in televising such a fight, but it might not happen anytime soon. Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez told Michael Woods that a Charlo vs. Ali fight is currently not in the cards, but it is a possibility.

Ali scored a huge upset this past December when he retired former world champion Miguel Cotto, beating him by unanimous decision to win the WBO junior middleweight title. Ali recently said he would stay at 154 pounds and hopes to unify world titles. Ali could end up fighting mandatory challenger Liam Smith, who finished up a two-fight series against Liam Williams late last year to figure out who could be challenging for the WBO belt at some point in 2018.
