WBC Cruiserweight Champion Mairis Briedis To Defend Title On September 30 WBSS Card

After the first super middleweight fight in the World Boxing Super Series has been announced, the cruiserweight tournament has announced its first fight.

WBC cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis will defend his title in the quarterfinals against Mike Perez on September 30 at the Riga Arena in Latvia.

Roberto Dalmiglio, Comosa's Head of Management Board, said he is excited the tournament will make a stop in Briedis' home country of Latvia.

"The World Boxing Super Series is truly a global phenomenon," Dalmiglio said. "Over the course of the tournament, we will be visiting some of the best venues around the world. We're very happy to be bringing this fight to the Riga Arena in Latvia, which will provide the perfect setting for an unforgettable night of boxing."

The only fight to have a date and venue for the World boxing Super Series is Callum Smith will fight Erik Skoglund on September 16 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. The special WBC Diamond belt will be on the line in that fight.

The cruiserweight tournament's first round matches, with fighter's seeds in parenthesis, are the following:

  • (1) Oleksandr Usyk (WBO cruiserweight champion) vs. Marco Huck
  • (2) Murat Gassiev (IBF cruiserweight champion) vs. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk
  • (3) Mairis Briedis (WBC cruiserweight champion) vs. Mike Perez
  • (4) Yunier Dorticos (WBA "regular" cruiserweight champion) vs. Dmitry Kudrayshov

All eight first-round fights in the series' two divisions are expected to be contested between September and October. The winner of each tournament will win the Muhammad Ali trophy.
