WBC: Felipe Orucuta "Breathing Independently," Still Hospitalized

Some more positive news regarding the condition of former world title challenger Felipe Orucuta.

The Mexican fighter had been hospitalized in Mexico for nearly a week after a fight against Jonathan Javier Gonzalez left Orucuta suffering a blood clot in his brain. Since the initial news of Orucuta's hospitalization, the WBC had been sharing nothing but positive news on his recovery and the latest piece of news indicates that Orucuta is able to breathe with no artificial respirator. Below is the latest update from the WBC.

The World Boxing Council reports that Felipe Orucuta is now breathing without the aid of an artificial respirator, at the Ángel Hospital, in Uruapan, Michoacán.

Felipe is breathing independently, helped with some enriched oxygen. This news that fills everyone in the Boxing Family with optimism. We are in your corner Champ!

Prior to this update, it had been publicly known that Orucuta was able to have some movement following surgery. In his bout against Gonzalez, Orucuta was badly hurt at the end, receiving multiple power punches to the face and was not able to defend at all against Rodriguez's combinations. When the fight was stopped, Orucuta dropped to the canvas and was attended to by medical personnel and later taken to a hospital.

Orucuta was one of two boxers in the past few days to be hospitalized a brain injury after former world champion Zab Judah had to deal with bleeding on the brain after being stopped by Cletus Seldin. That fight took place on June 7 in Verona, New York for the NABA junior welterweight title.
