With no opportunity at the WBC heavyweight title being handed out to Dominic Breazeale and Dillian Whyte anytime soon, the governing body has created an interim title to name a mandatory challenger.
The WBC has officially ordered Dillian Whyte and Dominic Breazeale to fight for the newly-created interim WBC heavyweight title. Negotiation period has begun and a purse bid will be held in Mexico City, Mexico on March 19 if no deal is reached by then. The winner of that fight will become the new mandatory challenger for the WBC title held by Deontay Wilder.
Currently, Wilder and Tyson Fury are close to securing a deal for their title rematch from their December 1 fight that ended in a draw. The WBC ordered a rematch between Wilder and Fury and the two were supposed to have a purse bid very soon, but the negotiation period has been extended as both sides appear to be near completing a deal.
Breazeale had been the WBC’s mandatory challenger for the heavyweight title for some time, but has yet to get his shot at the title as it was expected that Wilder and unified champion Anthony Joshua would have a heavyweight superfight. The fight never happened, but Wilder is moving forward with the rematch against Fury. Breazeale returned to the ring last December, knocking out Carlos Negron on a PBC on Fox card from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Whyte had been trying to negotiate a deal to fight Joshua on April 13 at Wembley Stadium, but talks recently fell through. Joshua, the WBA “Super,” WBO and IBF heavyweight champion, has moved on to a potential fight against Jarrell Miller for later this year in the United States. Whyte has previously stated that he will fight at the O2 Arena on April 20. Although no opponent was announced, Whyte said he hopes his next fight would be against Breazeale in order to become the mandatory challenger for the WBC title.
