When Gennady Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler arrived in Kiev, Ukraine for the annual WBC Convention, his goal was to to get the WBC to order a third fight between Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.
Loeffler failed in accomplishing that particular goal but he did get the next best thing: a title eliminator where Golovkin can have a chance to become the mandatory challenger to Alvarez's title. Towards the end of the convention, the WBC ordered Golovkin to face interim champion Jermall Charlo.
The winner of the fight would get to become the mandatory challenger to the WBC title currently being held by Alvarez while the Mexican star was allowed to have an voluntary title defense in December.
Golovkin became the interim WBC champion at 160 pounds back in 2014 when he knocked out Marco Antonio Rubio in the second round of their fight. Alvarez previously won the WBC title but vacated the title in 2016 to pursue the WBO junior middleweight title before moving back up in weight. In that meantime, Golovkin was elevated to full champion.
After Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a draw in their September 2017 superfight, the pair met on September 15, 2018. Alvarez defeated Golovkin by majority decision, winning Golovkin's WBA "super" and WBC titles while also capturing the vacant Ring Magazine middleweight title.
While not specifying who his opponent would be, Charlo wrote on Twitter that he will be fighting in December.
Charlo has been one of the top contenders for the WBC title since last year when he defeated previously top-ranked Jorge Sebastian Heiland. Charlo then won the interim WBC title this past April with a quick victory over Hugo Centeno Jr.
