WBC President On Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder: "We Are All For It"

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman wants to see his world heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, face off against unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a unification bout.

Sulaiman talked to ESPN and said he not only wants to see the two heavyweights duke it out, but wants to see even more unification bouts take place within the sport.

"I believe it's a must that we have more unification fights in boxing," Sulaiman said. "Because there are so many champions, a good champion can run out of contenders. Wilder and Joshua is a must. I think the world be waiting for that fight and I don't see anyone beating either of them. Wilder has a mandatory [defence] and we are looking into that as we speak. Bermane Stiverne is the mandatory. We are all for it [Wilder versus Joshua]. If both fighters are available for that unification we will be in complete support of seeing it."

Wilder has been linked to another unification bout: one with WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, but Parker is still trying to negotiate a fight with mandatory challenger Hughie Fury, cousin of former unified heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. As Sulaiman said, Wilder is ordered to fight Stiverne, his mandatory challenger.

Joshua is potentially busy with a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko. The rematch has not been official, but the two sides have expressed interest since Joshua beat Klitschko back in April. Even if the rematch between Joshua and Klitschko doesn't happen, Joshua would then have to face IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev.
