Although Luke Campbell was unsuccessful in his last world title challenger, his next fight could bring him back up to world title contention and avenge his first-ever loss as a professional boxer.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman wrote on Twitter that Campbell and Yvan Mendy, the organization?s top two lightweight boxers have reached an agreement to fight in a title eliminator for the WBC title currently held by Mikey Garcia. The WBC previously ordered Campbell and Mendy to fight in a title eliminator.
A date and venue for the fight has not been reached, but it is understood that the fight will take place on the undercard of Anthony Joshua?s next fight, which would take place in September. Joshua?s next fight has not been announced as he, alongside promoter Eddie Hearn, is negotiating a fight with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder to unify all four major heavyweight titles.
Campbell and Mendy have fought once back in 2015 when Campbell was the WBC International lightweight champion. Mendy narrowly beat Campbell by split decision to win the International title. Now the winner of the rematch could get a shot at Garcia, provided that he walks away with his title when he faces IBF champion Robert Easter Jr. in a unification bout later this year. That fight has yet to be formally announced, but it is widely reported to take place in Los Angeles later this year.
Campbell previously challenged for the WBA lightweight title last year but lost to Jorge Linares by split decision in an HBO-televised bout. Mendy has never challenged for a world title at lightweight.
