A battle of top five welterweight contenders has been added to UFC 217 as #1 Stephen Thompson is in action against #4 Jorge Masvidal.
MMA Fighting was the first to announce the bout.
Thompson (13-2-1) is coming off of a pair of failed opportunities to win the UFC Welterweight Title, fighting Tyron Woodley to a draw at UFC 205 and then he suffered a defeat to him at UFC 209. Thompson is competing in his first three round fight in over three years, with his last three round bout coming against Patrick Cote at UFC 178. Thompson has only lost to a pair of fighters in the UFC, those fighters are Tyron Woodley and Matt Brown.
Masvidal (32-12-0) has won three of his last four fights in the UFC, with those three wins coming over Donald Cerrone, Jake Ellenberger and Ross Pearson. Masvidal also competed as a lightweight in the UFC, winning four of six fights in the division before moving up to welterweight. Masvidal has also competed in the Strikeforce promotion, where he had unsuccessfully challenged for the Strikeforce Lightweight Title.
UFC 217 takes place on Saturday, November 4 from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York with Michael Bisping and Georges St. Pierre headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
