World Boxing Super Series To Have September Card In The U.S.

The mostly-European World Boxing Super Series is coming to the United States in September.

The Super Series will hold a card at the Alamodome in Sa Antonio, Texas, on September 23, headlined by the cruiserweight tournament's first-round matchup between WBA "regular" cruiserweight champion Yunier Dorticos and Dmitry Kudryashov.

Dorticos, who defected from Cuba to Miami, is the tournament's No. 3 seed and one of two non-European boxers in the cruiserweight tournament.

Kudryashov, the current WBC Silver cruiserweight champion, expressed excitement at fighting in the United States for the first time in his pro career.

"I can't wait for this fight to take place. One thing is for sure - the crowd in San Antonio gets an explosive affair that doesn't go the distance," Kudryashov said. "I think it's amazing that this tournament only contains the best of the best, all four reigning cruiserweight champions. I have respect for Dorticos and the other participants, but they will also respect my hammer because it will bring me all four titles and the Muhammad Ali Trophy."

The card is being promoted by Richard Shaeffer of Ringstar Promotions. No undercard is set, but a likely name to fight in the undercard is former world champion Nonito Donaire, who recently signed with Shaeffer and the promoter did say the plan is for Donaire to fight on a World Boxing Super Series undercard first before moving onto to any possible world title fights.

The only World Boxing Super Series first round match to not have a date is the Murat Gassiev vs. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk fight from the cruiserweight tournament. Gassiev's IBF cruiserweight title is expected to be on the line as well.
