Since the rise of Jinder Mahal, a Canadian of Indian descent who is billed from Punjab, India, there has been speculation everywhere that it would only be a matter of time before WWE would bring back the vaunted Punjabi Prison match, and now it looks like the barbaric bamboo structure will be built in the City of Brotherly Love.
Yes, as was first reported weeks ago by Wrestling With Words and now echoed in several other publications, Jinder Mahal will defend the WWE Championship in another rematch against Randy Orton at Battleground in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 23rd, and he'll do it inside of a Punjabi Prison.
The Punjabi Prison structure was recently taken out of mothballs in the WWE's company warehouse so it could be cleaned up and repaired, further confirming the match, even as has yet to be announced by WWE.
This will be the third Punjabi Prison match in WWE history. Originally billed as the specialty match for The Great Khali, he was set to face The Undertaker in the very first Punjabi Prison match at Great American Bash 2006, but Khali was suspended for a Wellness Policy Violation. But rather than cancel or postpone the match, WWE just slotted Big Show in Khali's place. Don't feel too bad for Khali, though; he got another chance to show off his specialty when he took on Batista at No Mercy 2007. Well, I guess you can feel bad for Khali--he lost that match to Batista.
The Punjabi Prison consists of two structures--a smaller cage surrounding the wrestling ring, and a larger one encircling the outside ring area. Contestants must be the first to escape from both to be declared the winner.
