On next week's episode of SmackDown Live, Randy Orton will take on Shinsuke Nakamura in a #1 Contender's match. The winner will face Jinder Mahal in a WWE Title match at an as yet unannounced later date. The next SmackDown branded pay-per-view is Hell in Cell on October 8 in Detroit, Michigan.
Next week's match was announced as the commentary team pointed out that Orton and Nakamura would be teaming up in tonight's main event to face off against Mahal and Orton's SummerSlam opponent, Rusev.
Nakamura and Orton were the winners, with Nakamura getting the pinfall on Rusev following a Kinshasa knee attack, but after the bell, as the victors were celebrating in the middle of the ring, this happened:
