The Rock 'n' Roll Express will be enshrined into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania weekend, and while Robert Gibson is honored by the induction, he never doubted it would happen.
Gibson discussed the pending induction of himself and Ricky Morton into the Hall of Fame among a variety of other topics during an appearance on the latest episode of Steve Austin's podcast.
"It's going to be a big honor," Gibson told Austin. "It's always an honor to get something like this and I'm looking really, really forward to it. ... I can't say I doubted it would ever happen because we've been around a long time and a lot of fans, all I get on my emails and Facebook is 'when are you guys going in? You're long overdue.' And I'd tell them, 'When it's right, it's right.' "
Gibson also discussed the origin of the team, which formed back in 1983, noting the original team name was supposed to be the R & R Express -- short for Ricky and Robert. Instead, they took the Rock 'n' Roll name, something that two other current WWE Hall of Famers have taken credit for through the years.
"Jimmy Hart, he tells me all the time that he came up with the name 'Rock 'n' Roll'. [Jerry] Lawler says he did, so it's kind of between them two," Gibson said.
Gibson had previously teamed regularly with his brother, Rick, and noted that he and Morton basically adopted the same style and spots, which allowed the duo to jell quickly as a tag team.
"Our chemistry was so good together that we would swap because it was there at the time to do. We could take each other's spot and it was nothing. We could adjust either way," Gibson said.
The Rock 'n' Roll Express continue to work independent shows to this day, and even appeared on TNA in December as part of the Apocalypto tag match held at the Hardy Compound in North Carolina. Spending more than 30 years together on a regular basis meant friction, at times, was inevitable.
"I was with him more than I was with my wife," Gibson noted. "Being on the road, I was with him every day. Nine months with anybody will start to get on your nerves, so when we'd come to that point, we would just ride different. We would ride in different cars. We'd just meet up at the arena, do our thing, and then, we'd take off again in different cars. We always did business because that was the name of the game back then. We were smart enough. We knew where our bread was buttered. But if we would have our differences, we would just ride in different cars. We never came to a point where we were going to fight each other."
The WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 1.
