UFC Contender Volkan Oezdemir Arrested For Battery

MMA

Bad news for the UFC, their light heavyweight division and Volkan Oezdemir as he was arrested for aggravated battery Saturday in Florida.

The arrest took place in Fort Lauderdale, and an arrest record from the facility he was booked in has the charge listed as "causing bodily harm or disability." He's pending trial as a $10,000 surety bond is pending, although he'll likely be released on a much smaller percentage of that bond.

There are no details thus far on what caused the arrest.

Oezdemir trains in Florida and had earned the attention of UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier of late. Cormier noted on social media recently that he'd polled his fans to gauge interest in potential contenders he could square off with, and that Oezdemir garnered the most interest by far. No fight had been announced, however.

The 28-year old Oezdemir last fought in July at UFC 214, where he knocked out Jimi Manuwa to give him his third consecutive victory over a top-10 ranked UFC opponent. Other big wins in the UFC include Ovince Saint Preux and Misha Cirkunov, both of which took place in 2017.

Fightful.com will have more information and a video update on the arrest soon.
