It has been over three years since former World Extreme Cagefighting Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho has stepped inside of the cage.

However, the former champion has been in a different battle as of late, as he is recovering from injuries recently sustained in a car accident.

“I fractured the acetabulum and my left hand, but I’m fine,” Filho said to MMA Fighting. “I'll probably undergo surgery tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. I’m waiting now at the Tijutrauma hospital.”

Filho apparently drove the wrong way on the road, something he claimed was accidental, which is when he collided with somebody driving a Vectra. The driver of the other vehicle suffered an acetabulum fracture as well. The recovery time for the other driver isn’t known.

The former MMA champion also had somebody in the passenger seat of his vehicle, that person suffered no injuries.

While police were at the scene of the accident alongside medical personnel, no charges have been filed against anybody involved in the accident.

Filho (23-6-3) hasn’t competed since suffering a unanimous decision loss to Andre Muniz at Bitetti Combat 19 in February 2014. The Brazilian won the WEC Middleweight Title at WEC 29 in August 2007, when he submitted UFC veteran Joe Doerkson.
