Mai Sakurai Opens Up About Her Decision To Leave Marigold, Says She Won’t Be Back Anytime Soon

Mai Sakurai opens up about her pending departure.

Mai Sakurai’s final match with Dream Star Fighting Marigold is scheduled for October 24th. She announced that she is going to leave the promotion and take a break from pro wrestling.

Sakurai spoke to reporters (via Tokyo Sports) and disclosed that one of the reasons she’s stepping away is to tend to issues with her knees and neck, which were affected by a cervical sprain. She had also been dealing with stress-related health issues since the start of 2026.

“As other wrestlers left the promotion and my own position changed, there were times when I was pushing myself too hard and trying to be something I wasn’t. I’ve been muddling through until now, but I’ve reached a point where I can no longer balance what’s expected of me with what I’m actually capable of.”

Sakurai added that she feels she’s done everything she could in Marigold. She does not know what the future holds, but knows she won’t be back anytime soon.

“I feel I’ve done everything I could. I don’t know what the future holds, but since I’ve made the decision to leave, I won’t be returning to Marigold anytime soon.”

Sakurai’s final match is taking place at the Marigold Grand Destiny show at Ryōgoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo.
