Mark Briscoe Says Gimmick Matches Are ‘An Easy Night Of Work’ For Him
Mark Briscoe professes his love for gimmick matches.
Since its inception, AEW has always been home to some of the best stipulation matches in all of wrestling. This includes reoccurring match types like Stadium Stampede, the Casino Gauntlet match, Blood & Guts, and Anarchy In The Arena.
Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, Mark Briscoe said that gimmick matches are his favorite thing in wrestling.
“That’s my favorite thing. No, man. Actually, that’s my favorite thing, man. Watching wrestling growing up, whenever it was a fill-in-the-blank match—there were some that was dumb, like when they did the bra and panties or the stuff that was just totally comedic—but any kind of incorporated violence, any kind of gimmick match. I was like, ‘Man, shoot, this is cool. This is cool.’ I like wrestling.”
Briscoe continued on and talked about gimmick matches being unique to the world of pro wrestling.
“I like watching wrestling when it’s just two guys one-on-one and it’s first one to get the one-two-three or make the other guys have out wins and there’s DQs and countouts. I love that too. But, man, gimmick match wrestling—plunder, tables, ladders, chairs, cages, barbed wire and tacks—man, for one, it makes it different and fun. You ain’t gonna see that nowhere else. You’re ain’t gonna see that in the UFC, you ain’t gonna see that in MMA, boxing. That’s just wrestling, man. It’s just wrestling. It’s something that is unique to pro wrestling.”
Briscoe rounded out the topic by saying that he’s gotten comfortable with gimmick matches.
“As a performer, as a wrestler, as a competitor, I’ve gotten so comfortable with these type of matches that it makes it easy not to work. As crazy as that sounds, ‘Oh, you’re gonna smash through tables and be bleeding like a stuck pig and this and that,’ that’s an easy night of work to me. If I got to go out there and just go bell to bell for 20 minutes, then that’s putting in work for me. But, shoot, you get the blood flowing, get the plunder busting and breaking into chairs. I love it, man. I don’t love nothing more than gimmick match wrestling.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Briscoe talked about Lio Rush potentially joining The Conglomeration. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
