‘Moana’ Starring The Rock Earns $43 Million Domestic Opening Weekend

The numbers are in for the live-action version of “Moana,” and they are disappointing by most accounts.

The film drew $43 million domestic and $52 million international for a $95 million worldwide total. The film was number one for the weekend.

The live-action version of the popular animated movie had a $250 million production budget, which doesn’t include marketing. The animated version was released just a decade ago, and the sequel was released in 2024.

Disney was projecting a $60 million to $65 million domestic debut and $140 million globally. It barely beat out “Snow White” in 2024 for the lowest live-action remake opening weekend. “Snow White” drew $42 million domestic opening weekend before finishing its run with $87 million total domestic and $205 million worldwide.

The Rock stars as Maui, the same character he voices in the animated movies, in the film.
