Nic Nemeth Talks Defending TNA World Title Outside Of The Company, ‘There’s A Responsibility That You Have As Champ’

Nic Nemeth wants to maintain the value of the TNA World Championship.

Nemeth is currently in the midst of his second stint with the belt. The reign started at Slammiversary when he unseated Mike Santana and his six month reign with the title.

Back in August, Nic Nemeth defended his championship at two separate Adrenaline Championship Wrestling events. Speaking with Fightful for a new interview, Nemeth talked about getting the opportunity to defend his title outside of TNA.

“Once in a great while, if I know the person or the company or even Carlos was like, ‘Hey, do you want to
do something special? Do it.’ ‘Hey, cool.’ But we’re very lucky at TNA with our front office, with our
president, with anybody who’s been in, whether it’s D’Amore or Tommy or Hunter, you can text anybody
any day or night and they won’t go, ‘What are you stupid?’ They won’t do that. They’ll just go, ‘Oh, that’s
an interesting idea. What about this?’ You have this back and forth, and when it comes to creative plans,
match plans, ideas, they are there for it. So it’s pretty cool. It doesn’t happen often because I want it to be
special and I want most of the TNA defenses to be getting a number for Impact or getting some butts in
seats for Bound for Glory to say like, ‘Man, Leon’s friggin’ awesome,’ but getting the option to put that
title up sometimes is pretty damn cool too, because there’s a responsibility that you have as champ.”

Nemeth joked about the old days of the business before touting how trustworthy he is as a representative for TNA.

“It’s not the old NWA days where you gotta put down a $50,000 deposit to carry the strap around, but it’s
something along the lines, ‘I’m responsible.’ I feel like I’m the mature adult—which makes no sense,
because I’m not mature—but in the business to where you can trust me to do PR, to fly to another country,
to put the title on the line, to fight in some other country that you never heard of and come out of there
with that thing, because I got that shooter background just in case somebody wants to try me, I’m all ears.”

Continuing on, Nemeth said that he’s been doing the best work of his career since he turned 40.

“I don’t think there’s anybody by the time I retire that will ever have the record that I have of not just
showing up every day for 30 years but for stealing the show for 30 years straight. Whether you want to
pretend that I was bad at wrestling because I lost all the time in WWE, the reason they paid me a shitload of money to be there and stay is because I’m awesome and I’ve only gotten better. I think 40 to 46 age-
wise is where I’ve done my best work because every couple years I’ll look back and be like, ‘Man, I was pretty damn good, right?’ and I’ll look and go, ‘It’s a little cringy.’ But every every year or two I look back
and go, ‘Okay I’ve gotten a little bit better, but I’m much better now,’ and I feel great. I look great. I back it
up. The equity is there and having that responsibility as the TNA champ is absolutely awesome and I look
forward to defending it more around the world whether TNA is there as a show or not.”
