Jelly Roll’s involvement in wrestling has slowly grown from just single appearances where he would easily run through low card heels to wrestling full matches where he would take announce table bumps and more. While he has been working primarily with WWE for these moments, he also made an appearance at a TNA taping earlier this year where AJ would cut a promo on the singer.
While speaking to the Battleground podcast in a recent interview, AJ Francis spoke about Jelly Roll, recalling meeting him 10 years ago for the first time.
“I would love to do a song with Jelly Roll, but I don’t think we’re ever going to wrestle in the ring. I think he’s scared. Because, I mean, anybody can, you know, Kit Wilson is, what, a buck 85? You know what I’m saying? Stepping in the ring with 6’5″, 300 pounds is a different animal, and I think Jelly Roll knows that, right? You know, I would love to wrestle a match with Jelly Roll, and when I saw him backstage, before I said that he had that fish fillet body, when I saw him, because I’ve actually known… I met Jelly Roll like 10 years ago through our mutual friend, Mike Busey. I met Jelly Roll when he was a rapper, right? So… you know, I’ve known Jelly for a long time. So when I saw him backstage, I said, ‘yo, are you going to be out there in the crowd?’ He’s like, ‘yeah.’ Because I had this whole other promo bit that I was going to do. Talking bad about the Tennessee Titans because the Seattle Seahawks had just won the Super Bowl. So I was just going to talk trash about the Titans and how bad they are and all these other things, and then Jelly was like, ‘I’ll be out there,’ and I was like, yo, I’m going to say something to you. He said, ‘say whatever you want.; So I said, ‘okay.’ So then that’s why I went out there and I came up with that line, and the thing is, it’s so funny because I didn’t know what I was going to say. But you got to understand, I grew up chubby in Baltimore, right? Where I’m from, it’s called Jonah. You got to be able to be funny and quick very fast because them jokes going to fly, right? So I didn’t even know what I was going to say when I went out there. I just knew when I saw him, I was going to say something, and then I just, off the top, I just said, yeah, you’re a fish fillet, body built ass, and that, and it just, and it was crazy, and it got a huge reaction, and Jelly was like, it was funny because like, I would love nothing more than to face Jelly Roll.”
