AJ Styles comments on Vince McMahon wanting him to be who he was in Japan.
While Styles’ early career was largely contained to TNA, he would eventually step away from the promotion in 2014 and would explore the world, most notably in Japan. Following this time in Japan, AJ would sign with WWE in a blockbuster signing, debuting in the 2016 Royal Rumble match.
While speaking to Undisputed in a new interview, AJ Styles would note that he doesn’t believe he would have made it to WWE without his time in Japan.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that I may not have made it to WWE without Japan,” said Styles. “My tenure in Japan helped me figure out who I was and what I wanted to do.”
Styles would also note that upon signing with WWE, Vince McMahon wanted him to be the guy he had been in Japan prior to signing.
“When I went to WWE, Vince wanted me to be who I was in Japan,” said Styles. “That style from Japan did not change when I went to WWE. That’s the guy Vince wanted, so I didn’t have to change anything. Maybe that’s why it got over so well.”
Styles recently noted how he has almost collapsed during his entrance on occasion. You can read more about that here.
