AJ Styles wondered how familiar John Cena was with his career prior to their first match together.
Throughout 2016 and into the first month of 2017, AJ and Cena would face off in a series of bouts kicking off at 2016’s WWE Monday In The Bank PPV, where Styles would score his first victory over Cena during their dream match rivalry.
While speaking to Undisputed in a new interview, Styles shared how he wondered if Cena would be familiar with his career prior to their first match.
“When you’re in the WWE bubble, it’s very difficult to keep up with anything else, so I wondered how familiar he was with it,” said Styles. “My thinking is that, over time, he heard more and did more research. Before our first match, he told me that he was trying to find stuff on me to cut a promo, but he couldn’t really find much. I’m assuming a lot of his research came from the Bullet Club, and that’s what he knew about it.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Styles spoke of how Vince McMahon wanted him to be what he was in Japan upon his signing with the company. You can read more about that here.
