Angelico: I Wish Tony Khan Would Buy The Rights To Lucha Underground & Bring It Back
Angelico looks back on Lucha Underground.
From October 2014 to November 2018, Lucha Underground was in operation. There were four seasons of the pro wrestling program before it was effectively cancelled and the promotion ended.
One of the names who was featured on the show was two-time Lucha Underground Trios Champion Angelico. He partook in a virtual signing for Captain’s Corner and dove into the original concept for Lucha Underground.
He said it’s probably his favorite version of a pro wrestling company that he’s ever watched or been part of. Angelico wishes that AEW/ROH owner Tony Khan would acquire the rights to Lucha Underground and bring it back.
“When we were in AAA, they obviously had come up with the concept for Lucha Underground. But, they presented it to us — the initial roster — it was maybe like a group of five, six, seven of us from AAA. They presented it to us. The original concept they had for it was completely different to what it turned out to be actually. When they showed it to us, it was all very elaborate. It was like a ring with different height platforms coming out of the corners. So guys could not just use the top rope. They could go up onto certain platforms and stuff like that. There was a rope swing that you could take.” Angelico was asked if the rope swing was Tarzan-style, and he said, “Yeah. It was a very wild concept and then eventually, it got sort of chopped down into what it became which was much better I think, right?” Further speaking about the original concept plans, Angelico said, “It’s cool, but that also looks very funky. Almost like a circus, Cirque du Soleil kind of take on pro wrestling. So when I saw it like that, I was like, ‘Eh. It looks different but I’m not too sure what it’s gonna be.’ But then when it actually came out, and I saw what it really was, it’s probably still my favorite version of a pro wrestling company that I’ve ever watched or been a part of. Hour-long episodes. Cinematic. No one ever talked in the ring. The ring was always meant to be sacred, just for the action, just for the wrestling so, all the interactions between the wrestlers had to happen backstage so I liked that concept as well. Separated it to any other wrestling promotion out there where you’re always seeing guys with a microphone in the ring, and yeah, I wish Tony Khan would buy out the rights to Lucha Underground and bring it back. It’s still my favorite thing.” He continued, “Never say never, for sure.”
Angelico has been signed to AEW since 2019. Present day, he mainly competes on ROH programming. He last wrestled for the company at an ROH taping in July.
