The WWE is bringing back Axelmania.
Yes, the spring 2015 gimmick for Curtis Axel that was borne out of his never "technically" being eliminated from the Royal Rumble (and therefore deserving a shot at the title at (Axel)Mania), and which eventually led to him full-on impersonating late-80s era Hulk Hogan and teaming with "Macho Mandow" to get their butts kicked at the Payback 2015 Kickoff Show.
It died a swift death when Hulk Hogan's racist comments came to light in his sex tape and WWE brass didn't want someone impersonating such a controversial figure, so they pulled the plug on Axelmania in a hurry. Since then Axel has teamed with the Social Outcasts and spent a lot of time on Superstars and Main Event.
But now, at a house show in St. Louis on Tuesday night, the gimmick has been resurrected, and there's photographic evidence to prove it:
Some thought this might have been a one-off type of thing, using it only for this one show, but there were also reports that Axelmania ran wild in Brooklyn last night.
The speculation is that this might be another test balloon being floated to see if the public at large would be receptive to the idea of bringing back Hulk Hogan for a Wrestlemania 33 appearance, but that's all hearsay at this point.
From what we're seeing on social media, though, even if the WWE Universe doesn't want Hogan back, they're ready to eat their vitamins and say they prayers for another hefty dose of Axelmania.
