Ben Bishop On Social Media In Wrestling: It’s Silly To An Extent, But You’ve Gotta Utilize It
Ben Bishop discusses his social media presence.
The 35-year-old was able to break into independent wrestling stardom with his hilarious and relatable videos on social media. Now, Bishop’s internet skits seem to go viral on a near-weekly basis, allowing people outside of the wrestling bubble to discover him.
Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, Bishop spoke about one of his videos that didn’t hit.
“So probably when I did the I’m Just Ben, based on the I’m Just Ken music video, where I thought that shit was gonna hit and it didn’t hit. I took I wrote lyrics, I had I had to go film in different locations. I was so excited. I tried to get my voice to sound at least good enough and it didn’t take off. Maybe I need to repost it, maybe I’ll repost it. But it was so good and I’m so mad that it did not hit.”
Bishop then recalled one video that did big numbers, saying that it took him minimal effort to make it.
“The one of me walking in the house and my wife saying, ‘Go clean up the dog shit.’ That took me five minutes and I was just like, ‘It’s just an idea,’ and all of a sudden I posted it I went to the gym I looked at my phone and I’m like hundred thousand views out of nowhere. It took off. Even on and on Facebook, to six million views, and that’s how, you today most people are saying, I hit the algorithm in June where things started really, really taking off. Now it’s just like, ‘I’ve never seen you wrestle, but I love your reels.’ I’m like, ‘You know what? That’s more important to me actually.’”
Bishop finished off the topic by explaining the importance of social media in today’s wrestling landscape.
“I say this now because nowadays it’s just so different, right? We’re not going to convince anyone this is real. Most likely no one is going to like you—if you’re an indie guy, not talking about guys who are signed indie guys—no one’s going like you just based off your wrestling. They wanna like you first, and then they wanna watch you wrestle. So that’s the way it’s gotta be, then more people are gonna see you online, and you might have 200 people at a show, but you have the possibility of reaching 200,000 people online, so why not take advantage of that? Some guys think social media is silly, and like, yeah, it is to an extent, but you gotta utilize it.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Ben Bishop revealed that Brian Myers told him that he’s too funny to be a wrestler. Fans can check out our article on those comments by clicking here.
