Beth Phoenix: WWE Didn't Have Plans For Me To Be A Dominant Superstar

Beth Phoenix discusses her WWE debut.

On the May 8, 2006, episode of WWE Raw, Beth Phoenix made her WWE debut, attacking Mickie James and siding with Trish Stratus. The partnership with Stratus and feud with James didn't last long as Phoenix suffered a jaw injury shortly after her main roster debut.

Speaking to Ring The Belle, Phoenix revealed that she wasn't sure where the angle with Trish and Mickie was going when she was brought in.

"Typical WWE. They're very good at keeping secrets, especially from the talent. I was brought in to be an ally of Trish. She had an arm injury and couldn't compete, so I was brought in to be an ally and be plugged into the division, but I don't think they necessarily had plans for me to be this dominant superstar," recalled Phoenix. "I feel like my injury, breaking my jaw, was the best thing that could happen to me because it gave me the opportunity to learn more in OVW and develop a heel character, which helped me become a centerpiece during that time."

Due to her injury, Phoenix went back to OVW before re-emerging on the main roster on July 9, 2007. Phoenix would go on to become a four-time Divas/Women's Champion, leading to her Hall of Fame induction in 2017.
