Bishop Dyer (Baron Corbin) Says Reception At Paris Live Event Changed The Finish To His Match With Rick Boogs
Bishop Dyer recalls getting a massive reaction in France.
On April 29, 2023, WWE visited Paris, France to host a live event at the Accor Arena. The show featured names like Cody Rhodes, Finn Balor, Bobby Lashley, Seth Rollins, Dominik Mysterio, Bianca Belair, and Damian Priest.
The card also featured a singles contest between Baron Corbin and Rick Boogs. Unexpectedly, Paris went crazy for Corbin, chanting for him and giving him ovations throughout the contest.
Speaking with Jeremy Lambert and Joel Pearl of Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds podcast, Dyer recalled the reaction, saying that he was sort of warned about it ahead of time.
“It was insane because I did an interview with a guy named Sturry who has a YouTube show in Paris that morning. We were checking out food because he’s a food guy. Wrestling, metal, all those things. He’s like, ‘Don’t be surprised if some people cheer for you.’ ‘You’re full of it, yeah right.’ At that time, I was in between characters. He’s like, ‘No, the people of France really expect you for the character work you’ve done. They think that you’ve never gotten what you deserve and you’re underappreciated and all those things. They might cheer for you.’ ‘There is no way.’ When that terrible Happy Corbin music hit and they lost their mind, I was like, instant chills. ‘This is the craziest reaction I’ve ever experienced.’”
Dyer then revealed that they had to change the finish to the match due to the fan reception.
“They’re chanting my name and I get in the ring and they’re still chanting. I was blown away. Rick Boogs’ music hits and they boo him. ‘Oh no. This is bad.’ He gets in the ring, looks and me, and I’m like, ‘I’m sorry. I have no idea. There is nothing I can do right now to change this.’ We started the match and we run the opening spot. He bumps me and they boo. ‘Oh no, this is backwards,’ because I’m working as a heel, but they hate him and love me. We just had to do it. I start stomping him in the corner and they are losing their minds. I’m stomping on him and am like, ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry.’ The crowd is like, ‘One more time!’ I fully went into it. They changed the finish while we were in the match with like a minute to go. The referee is like, ‘Corbin is up. Change the finish.’ I had to call a new finish to Boogs. When I beat him and the fans rushed the rail and were going crazy, I teared up because I was so shook that this was the reception. It’s funny because I get back to the curtain and the roster is standing there like, ‘What the hell just happened?’ They were back in catering and heard the reaction and Bayley was like, ‘Who is that for?’ ‘I think Corbin.’ ‘No way.’ They all ran to the monitor and watched it. It’s one of those moments you can never pay for or predict and it kind of makes every sacrifice that you put in to what you do work.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Dyer recalled a few nixed spots from his Royal Rumble bout with Roman Reigns. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
