Nigel McGuinness retired in 2011 due to medical complications, but has remained active in the business as an on-screen character and commentator.
McGuinness is part of AEW and helped make the announcement that AEW would be headed to Wembley Stadium for AEW All In. With AEW making its debut in London, many fans have wondered if McGuinness would find his way back to the ring.
McGuinness commented on the potential of an in-ring return in an interview with Stephanie Chase, saying he couldn't give a definitive answer, but did name Bryan Danielson as an opponent should he lace up the boots again.
Speaking at the AEW Double or Nothing press conference, Danielson was asked about stepping into the ring again with Nigel.
"I think Nigel probably needs to shut his mouth a little bit. At this point in his life, I don’t think he can handle the same intensity that he could in 2006. When you watch him on commentary...I think the world of Nigel. I think the world of him as a wrestler and as a commentator, but he no longer has the physical ability to matchup with me. He did at one point, but here I am, I’m 42 years old, and I train so hard to stay like this. He stopped training. Do you think you can catch back up in three months? No, you can’t. I look at his neck and I think that I’d break it," said Danielson.
Danielson and Nigel had critically acclaimed battles in Ring of Honor, including a 2006 match to unify the ROH World and ROH Pure Titles.
Danielson's last match in ROH was in 2009 against Nigel.
