The Butcher Explains The Mystery Behind His Tag Team With The Blade

On November 27, 2019, The Butcher and The Blade made their AEW debut when they attacked Cody Rhodes.

No background information was given on The Butcher & The Blade, though they were aligned with The Bunny (Allie) and it was later explained that they were hired by MJF as hitmen as part of his feud with Cody.

Speaking to Miro, The Butcher explained why he and The Blade wanted to remain a mystery as characters.

"I came up with these two weird characters based on 90s movies specialty thugs. Not like the main heel, but the guy you have to beat to get to the heel. When the local guys can't get it done, they have to call the weird guys from Milwaukee and they have to get it done. They have weird characteristics that are never explained, like a monocule and a weird mask. They're just hitmen for hire. People ask me, 'what is your character?' I'm like, 'watch any 90s action movie. A character like me will show up.' That's the whole thing. I just told it to Jesse [The Blade] because he's such a 90s movie buff and was like, 'let's just be weird dudes that never get anything explained. We'll call ourselves The Butcher and The Blade. You always refer to me as Butch and I'll refer to you as Blade.' That's it," he said.

Outside of wrestling, The Butcher is less mysterious as he is also part of the band Every Time I Die. When he signed with AEW, he explained that he wasn't quite sure he was ready to be in that position and worried how it would take away from his duties as rhythm guitarist.

"I was so scared," The Butcher said about making his AEW debut. "When Cody gave us the call, me and my girlfriend had a very serious talk about it. 'I don't know if I'm ready for this.' It was a huge life step and these people see something in me. I couldn't say no. Then, I had to go to my band and be like, 'Guys, this gonna be a bit weird because I now have two things that will take me away from home and I need to be home.' We had a great conversation about it, they were super supportive. I actually missed my first show because of AEW. I was the only member who had never missed a show in 23 years. I got to wrestle DDP, which was cool."

The match in which Butcher wrestled Diamond Dallas Page, which was a six-man tag team bout, took place on January 15, 2020 at AEW Bash at the Beach.

The Butcher and The Blade have been regulars on AEW Dynamite since their debut. They are currently aligned with Eddie Kingston. Butcher, Blade, and Kingston are set to compete on Wednesday's episode of AEW Dynamite against Jon Moxley, Rey Fenix, and Lance Archer.
