Carmelo Hayes was worried about how the rumor changes to NXT would affect his career.
Carmelo Hayes is currently the NXT North American Champion and he earned that opportunity by winning the NXT Breakout Tournament. However, after reading the rumors of NXT bringing in a lot of changes and a heavy focus on superstars that are larger in stature, Carmelo has assumed that he wouldn't be winning the tournament and instead, it would go to somebody much bigger, like Odyssey Jones.
“I’d read all the same things online, that NXT was going toward big guys and all this other stuff,” Hayes says to Sports Illustrated. “So if that was true, I thought that Odyssey was going to win the whole thing. But I beat Briggs, Duke, and then Odyssey, the three biggest guys in the tournament.”
Liking to associate himself with hard workers and winners, He's revealed that he hangs out with 3 more NXT superstars that have recently gotten a major break, including Trick Williams, his on-screen tag partner, Parker Boudreaux, and Bron Breakker.
“Those are my boys,” Hayes says. Those are the only people I’m close with, and we’re here to put in the work.”
The era of Carmelo Hayes as NXT North American champion begins tonight on NXT 2.0 and he is looking to make it last for a long time.
“I plan on making this North American championship the championship,” he says. “I don’t care if that pisses people off. I’m truly going to do that. I’m not just happy to be here. I’m here to be great.”
Fightful will have live coverage of WWE NXT 2.0 every Tuesday.
