Chris Jericho Taps Out Hiroshi Tanahashi At NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14, Forbidden Portal Shut

The forbidden portal remains shut as Chris Jericho tapped out Hiroshi Tanahashi in the co-main event of night two of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14.

Had Tanahashi defeated Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom 14, Jericho agreed to give Tanahashi a rematch for the AEW World Championship. Jericho had the AEW World Championship with him in the Tokyo Dome and AEW was referenced multiple times on commentary. Jericho was also introduced as the AEW World Champion by the ring announcer prior to the match.

But with Jericho submitting Tanahashi with the Walls of Jericho, there will seemingly be no AEW World Title bout between Jericho and a NJPW talent in the near future.

In his post-match comments (via Jim Valley), Jericho stated, "The forbidden door is closed, but I don't think it needs to be closed. Put aside all of the hurt feelings and egos."

As of now, AEW and NJPW have no working relationship. Jericho and Jon Moxley have done multiple matches in NJPW over the past year, but it is written into their AEW contracts that they can make appearances in NJPW. Moxley is the current IWGP United States Champion.

Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks have the same language written into their contracts, but they have not appeared in NJPW since wrestling at Wrestle Kingdom 13. The Elite recently revealed that they felt betrayed over how their NJPW departure was handled. You can view their full comments by clicking here.
