Christian Cage Says He And Edge Were Supposed To Split Up After WrestleMania 2000

Edge & Christian were supposed to go solo a year and a half before they did.

Edge & Christian were one of the top tag teams of WWE’s Attitude Era. Despite their success as a team and forever being linked to one another, Both Edge and Christian are perhaps better known as singles competitors the duo split up in the summer of 2001 but Christian Cage is now revealing that they were supposed to split up a year-and-a-half earlier following the Triangle Ladder Match at WrestleMania 2000 against The Hardy Boyz in The Dudley Boyz.

Christian Cage was a guest on the most recent episode of the podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy. On the podcast, he reveals that it was a sit-down interview, similar to the one that helped Triple H establish himself as “The Game,” that helped WWE see that there was more to the packaging of Edge & Christian as a tag team.

“I think maybe a few days before we actually sat down to put this together, we didn't even know what the finish was,” said Cage. “At one point, it was somebody else winning, and Edge & Christian, we're splitting up after this. So then we kind of we started to talk a little bit before this, or after this, when we kind of started talking and then we turned.”

Christian says that he and Edge were given free rein during the sit-down promo and their off-the-cuff remarks took them to a new level.

“They told us to say whatever we wanted and Adam and I started dropping F-bombs. We weren't supposed to — we were supposed to lose and that changed the minds. They were like, ‘Oh, these guys aren't done yet. There's more layers, as a tag.’ Then they decided to have us win the match and then turn heel because they saw some personality there when we were doing we did that promo. Then, we did a couple of things on commentary and that was kind of the thing that saved Edge and Christian as a team because we were going to split up after this,” said Christian.

Not only would Edge and Christian win at WrestleMania 2000, but they would win every Ladder or TLC Match that these teams would ever have.

Edge, Christian, Matt, and Jeff Hardy are all still active competitors. Edge is the only one still working for WWE as the other three are working for All Elite Wrestling
