CM Punk Believes The Original Plan For WWE WrestleMania XL Was Him vs. Seth Rollins For World Title

CM Punk talks about original plans for WrestleMania XL.

After nearly a decade away from WWE, CM Punk returned to WWE with every intention of headlining WrestleMania XL. However, a triceps injury Punk suffered in the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble halted those dreams dead in their tracks for now.

Speaking on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Punk discussed the original plans which he believes would have seen him headline one of the nights of WrestleMania against Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

"It changed a lot. I came back in and told Triple H, ‘Look, I’m not here to steal anybody’s spotlight, take anybody’s main event. I get it.’ I was pissed ten years ago when I had to sit through Rock-Cena two years in a row. Now, everything is different. Mania is two nights. More people get that opportunity. For me, the booker in my head, you cannot become main event talent unless you work with other main event talent. You can’t become main event talent unless you work main event spots afforded to main event talent. That’s what I crave. More knowledge and experience. I want to be that guy and see if I can be that guy. The plan, I think, was me and Seth."

Asked if he believed he was going to headline the first night of WrestleMania XL, Punk said, "I believe so. Again, I came in, 'I'm not asking questions.'"

Punk also said he would've been happy with wrestling Seth at WrestleMania. He feels it's a story that he could have really invested time and effort in.

"Me and Seth? Yeah. There is history there. There is a story there. I can sink my teeth into me and Seth."

CM Punk will now call the action when Rollins defends against Drew McIntyre on WrestleMania Sunday. Learn more here.
