CM Punk unexpectedly appeared on the June 13 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown, while John Cena made a rare follow-up appearance after already performing earlier in the night.
John Cena had called out Ron Killings, who had attacked him earlier that evening. He was seeking the truth, but it wasn't R-Truth. Instead, John Cena received the truth directly from the "Voice of the Voiceless." CM Punk emerged to a standing ovation from the crowd in Lexington, Kentucky. He gave Cena one last chance to renounce his evil ways and allow the fans to celebrate his legacy, however much of it remained, during this farewell tour. Cena refused, so Punk unleashed his fury.
CM Punk stated that he had no problem following John Cena to Saudi Arabia for their WWE Championship match at WWE Night of Champions because he would follow him to Mars or hell to prove that he is better. He declared that John Cena is a GOAT, but so is he, and he intends to sacrifice Cena to the memory of wrestling legends such as Terry Funk, Harley Race, Bret Hart, and Eddie Guerrero.

Punk remarked on the irony of their roles having switched since their rivalry in 2011, but he insisted that he had always seen through John Cena, and he had always been able to defeat him, "That's the truth."
He then left John Cena in the ring, allowing Ron Killings to attack Cena from behind a second time that evening. Killings would lock Cena in an STF, as Punk said, "I'm sorry. The truth hurts."
