CM Punk Had Some Idea He Would Be Debuting For AEW While Filming 'Heels'

CM Punk had been talking to Tony Khan for a year and a half and when he was filming "Heels" in late 2020 and early 2021, he knew he would be wrestling again.

Speaking to Joe Otterson of Variety, Punk explained how filming Heels worked as a training camp for him ahead of his official in-ring return.

“It wasn’t 100%, but I knew that’s what I was doing, if that makes sense,” he said. “It was just fortuitous, I guess. Here I am in a wrestling ring for this acting gig and I know, in the back of my head, I’m getting back into the ring in a few months anyway, so I figured it was two birds one stone. I got a little out of camp training.”

Punk returned to pro wrestling at AEW Rampage The First Dance and made his first Dynamite appearance on Wednesday.

He is set to get back in the ring at AEW All Out on September 5 when he faces Darby Allin. "Heels" airs Sundays on STARZ.
