CM Punk Names Roddy Piper, Paul Heyman, And Jim Cornette As Promo Influences
CM Punk discusses his promo influences. Some of his influences come from the top smarmy heels in wrestling history. However, much of it also stems from his own natural confidence.
CM Punk is renowned as a great wrestler, but many consider him one of the top talkers of his era and in wrestling history. Punk’s most famous moment in his career was his “Pipebomb” promo from 2011, and since then, it has always been presented on screen that CM Punk and the microphone are a very dangerous combo.
In a recent GQ YouTube video, Punk named Roddy Piper, Paul Heyman, and Jim Cornette as three of his top influences. However, he also admits that much of it is based on in-the-moment reactions and his own bravado.
“I think a lot of it, I was born with a lot of it. I learned from watching the great wordsmiths of our business, Roddy Piper, Paul Heyman, Jim Cornette, people who had a way with words. I’ve always just had that chip on my shoulder and a mouth. So a lot of it, I was indeed born with. When it comes to promos, each situation is drastically different from the next. I try not to plan too much, because I feel like it needs to be in the moment. I need to be less of an actor and more of a reactor. So a lot of moving parts are constantly changing. “
Punk also recently shut down somebody who asked about when he would retire. Read those comments here.
CM Punk also recently referred to John Cena as his wrestling soulmate. Read more here.
