CM Punk pitched he and Cody Rhodes putting their world titles on John Cena’s shoulders following his final match in WWE.
At WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event last December, John Cena would come up short in his retirement bout as he was forced to tap out to Gunther at the event. Following the match, Cena would have his farewell to his in ring career in WWE, with a video package as well as a special moment where Punk and Cody Rhodes would put their respective world titles on Cena’s shoulders to allow him a final moment with the championships in the ring.
In the second episode of WWE Unreal’s third season, CM Punk explained where he came up with the idea from, referencing a similar segment in 2005 where John Cena and Batista would put their titles on Hulk Hogan’s shoulders.
“I saw a clip, I mean, it’s gotta be 2005, because Batista and Cena are both champs and Hogan’s there. Cena and Batista, they both take their titles off and they put them on Hogan’s shoulders. I think the universe does silly things sometimes, I can’t remember who sent me the clip, but it knew there was a reason I saw it cause I saw it right before that day Cena was retiring, but I just thought it’s symbolic.”
It was also revealed Cena didn’t know in advance the pair were planning to do that for him.
Elsewhere in the same episode, Triple H would speak about the potential he sees in Liv Morgan. You can read more about that here.
