Cody Rhodes Says He Left AEW Over A 'Personal Issue,' Triple H Calls AEW A 'Secondary Promotion'

Cody Rhodes and Triple H comment on Cody leaving AEW.

"American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes" has officially premiered on Peacock and the documentary covers the story of Cody Rhodes thus far.

Details Behind Drew McIntyre's WWE Contract Talks

His time outside of WWE from 2016 to 2022 is cover, and includes discussion of his time in AEW, from helping form the company to leaving in February 2022.

While Cody doesn't detail why he left the company, he did comment, "This is my one request in this entire documentary. This one answer, I don't want edited in any capacity. Don't edit this part. I can't tell you why I left AEW. I can't, and I won't, but I'll tell you the reasons that were said that didn't actually matter. I didn't leave AEW because of money and I didn't leave AEW because of other talents. I left AEW because of a personal issue. That's it. The byproduct of leaving AEW is the opportunity to go for the biggest dream I ever had and the first dream I had in my life."

Cody has made it no secret that his goal is winning the WWE Championship.

Triple H said in the documentary, "To then take that gamble again and say, 'this is not what I wanted to be. I didn't grow up dreaming of being the champion or the face of a secondary promotion. I wanted to be the WWE champion.'"

Cody previously commented that he didn't leave AEW over any issues with Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks, or CM Punk.
