Cody Rhodes: Sting And Lex Luger Would Say Dusty Rhodes Threatened To Fire Them If They Lost Basketball Game To Charlotte Police

Dusty Rhodes was a booker who had his priorities in order.

Dusty Rhodes is not only a legendary wrestler from the ’70s and ’80s. He was also one of the top creative minds of the era. While booking for Jim Crockett Promotions, he helped make national stars out of Lex Luger and Sting. However, he wasn’t shy about potentially firing them if they embarrassed him outside of the squared circle. Unlike Bill Watts, he wasn’t worried about them losing a fight outside of the ring. Instead, he was concerned about losing a basketball game to the Charlotte Police Department.

Cody Rhodes recently spoke about a video of Dusty playing basketball during an appearance on the Bill Simmons Podcast. He stated that Dusty was the best basketball player he’d ever seen and joked about Dusty threatening to fire his top stars if they lost that friendly game of hoops.

“[Dusty] was the best basketball player I’ve ever seen in my life. He didn’t look it… It’s against the Charlotte Police Department. If you ask Lex Luger or Sting, who are both in it, just running. If you ask them about it, they say Dusty had a meeting before where he said, ‘If we lose to the police, you’re all fired,’ and they just went off. All these shots.”

That kind of dedication is what made Dusty the second most recognizable athlete of his time, behind Muhammad Ali. At least that’s what Bruce Prichard claims Dusty thought of himself.

Recently, Cody called his brother, Dustin Rhodes, the best wrestler of the family. Learn more here.
