Dakota Kai Says Turning On Raquel Gonzalez Was A Business Decision

For Dakota Kai, teaming and then turning on Raquel Gonzalez were both strictly business decisions.

After over a year of teaming together, Dakota Kai turned on Gonzalez last month, declaring her intentions to challenge for the NXT Women's Championship. Ahead of their match at tonight's TakeOver 36, Kai sat down with What's NeXT and said that she is sick of being in the shadows.

"So, we were paired at Portland last year," Dakota began by saying. "It was a business partnership from the start. I think she knows that too that what I did to her was a business decision. If she wants to take it personal, she can take it personal, but I'm sick of being in the shadows. I'm sick of being behind. People can call me jealous or whatever but I know what I want and I know what I want to get tonight, I want to walk out of this match as the new NXT Women's Champion."

Dakota is confident going into the match, saying that she has more experience and skill, noting how she didn't teach Raquel all of her tricks.

Kai and Gonzalez had been teaming on television since April 2020. They won the Women's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic 2021, which allowed them to become the first-ever NXT Women's Tag Team Champions.

Gonzalez has been NXT Women's Champion since WWE NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver in April.

Fightful will have live coverage of NXT TakeOver 36 today, August 22nd, beginning at 4:30 p.m. PST.
